6 Red Flags Employers See in Your Job History

6 Red Flags Employers See in Your Job History6 Red Flags Employers See in Your Job HistoryLong before you get to a job interview, hiring managers are forming opinions about you based on your resume and your job history. Here are six of the most common red flags they look for.1. You have multiple short-term jobs. If you have a history of quickly moving from one job to the next without staying very long, employers will wonder whether you get bored easily, or cant keep a job, or dont know how to identify the right fit for yourself. If you do have good reasons for the job changes (such as a spouse in the military), make sure to fill in your interviewer quickly so she doesnt draw the wrong conclusions.2. You quit your belastung job with nothing else lined up. Since most people line up a new job before quitting an old one, employers raise their eyebrows if you left without something new waiting. They wonder what the real story is Did you blow up one day and walk off the job in a fit of ang er? Do you get upset at work and make impulsive and rash decisions? Were you actually fired but trying to claim you left on your own?3. You were laid off from your last job. While plenty of layoffs are about company cutbacks or restructuring, employers know that companies sometimes use them as an opportunity to get rid of lower performers. To combat this question, be sure to mention if your whole team or division was let go. If you were the only one laid off, that raises more questions than if you were part of a group that was laid off.4. Youve been unemployed for a while. Even in this economy, some hiring managers look at long-term unemployed candidates and wonder if theres a reason that other employers havent hired them. Fortunately, many employers do understand that it can take time for even good candidates to find work in this market- but its important to show that youve been spending your time volunteering, building your skills, or something other than a year-long job search.5. You have large gaps between jobs. When employers see gaps of unemployment, they wonder what happened during that time. Did you leave the previous job with nothing lined up, and if so, why? (See No. 2) Were you working somewhere that youve deliberately left off your resume, and if so, what are you hiding? Gaps raise questions that you dont want on a hiring managers mind.6. None of your past managers are on your reference list. If you only offer peers as references, or other people who didnt directly supervise your work, hiring managers are going to wonder why. Managers are usually best able to speak to the quality of your work and your strengths and weaknesses, and steering reference-checkers away from those conversations can be a red flag. Plus, employers will usually ask to be put in touch with your past managers anyway.Alison Green writes the popular Ask a Manager blog, where she dispenses advice on career, job search, and management issues. Shes also the co-author of Managing to Change the World The Nonprofit Managers Guide to Getting Results, and former chief of staff of a successful nonprofit organization, where she oversaw day-to-day staff management, hiring, firing, and employee development.

5 ways to invest in yourself the concept of compound interest

5 ways to invest in yourself the concept of compound interest5 ways to invest in yourself the concept of compound interestBe patient with yourself. Self-growth is tender its holy ground. Theres no greater investment. ?Dr. Stephen CoveyHaving a why and purpose for what youre doing will ignite your quest for greater purpose in life. This means, once you make decisions, its best to know why youre doing what youre doing. When your decisions are informed by clear and educated thought, youre on the road to success. Then, you can start giving deeper thought to investing in yourself - in other words, building on the wins youve already accumulated.Think of it like this - when you have already started to build a strong foundation of values, experiences, small and large wins, the more you keep building on this, the greater structure and overall body of work youll have. In the process you refine and strengthen your character, by also gaining a reputation among others as someone of integrity. Building. Learning. Growing into the vision of yourself you always imagined. At a high level, this is a winning formula. Its where you truly form the living and breathing concept of compound interest. Compound interest, by definition, means interest computed on the sum of an original principal and accrued interest. Thats more of a financial term. Im talking about it in human capital.Compound interest manifests itself in the following pattern. For the sake of this discussion, lets use the path of becoming an entrepreneur of a digital marketing companyYou form your values, goals and plan for what you want to doYou get educated and begin to start earning experienceYou become an expert, producing great content, establishing a geschftsleben and learning all that you need to scale and sustain itAs you grow and continue repeating your process, you have built your principal and accrued interest. Now, its time to keep generating more interest. Once youve established yourself and demonstrated consistency, more opportunities come your way. New clients, media opportunities, industry-leaders willing to partner with you and help.I came up with a list of five ways to invest in yourself. Theyve helped to form a career as a bestselling author and coach. Ive landseen these threads throughout the lives of many successful people Ive studied. I hope they benefit you.1. Always show upThe gym I used to go to had a sign at the front that said, Showing up is half the battle. Corny? Cliche? Maybe. But think about this - if someone is willing to offer you a seat at the table - an opportunity to do something you love - why in the world wouldnt you take it? By accepting and committing, youre already there. You have a chance. And you should never, ever take it for granted. The rest of the battle is up to you. From there, you have to earn your keep.I think of this in the context of the abundance of resources we have at our fingertips in the modern world. If you want to learn something, th eres simply no stopping you if you have an Internet connection and access to resources at a public library. If youre willing to show up, you will eventually see extraordinary results. If you dont show up at all, youll always be left guessing, wondering and speculating. In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing. - Theodore RooseveltId encourage you to be discerning and wise when it comes to making decisions. You dont want to jump at just anything. But if you research opportunities - or better yet, have them come your way - then GO FOR THEM. Always show up. Always give things a shot.2. Keep doing (creating)Were all entitled to a day off, but for those of us who desire the best of ourselves, were not entitled to making up the rules. Or rule. In fact, heres the simple rule of life thats been proven time and againThe people who operate most efficiently, most effectively and w ith greatest consistency win. Its that simple.Id like to particularly focus on consistency. Consistency and repetition are the sharpest tools in the toolkit of winners. Keep doing. Keep creating and producing. This is what Id like to call The Rolling Stones model. The Rolling Stones became one of the most famous music groups of all time by making a lot of hit songs. Thats a fact. But you know what else The Rolling Stones did? They produced a lot of mediocre and just so-so songs. A lot. But what do people remember? They remember the hits, the best stuff. And you have to admire their overall body of work because they kept churning out the best work they could. They never stopped. Theyre leise goingKeep producing and churning out the best work you can. That may not be viewed as the best work by others. But its a heck of a lot better than doing nothing.3. Strengthening your strengths and eliminating your weaknessesIn a Harvard Business Review article, Bill Barnett shares the importance o f developing our strengths and reinforcing what those are in a multitude of ways. First, its important to list our strengths. Know what you believe them to be. But then, you need to seek external validation. Ask others what your strengths are. Think of times that youve done something well, when others have offered you review or feedback. What are your strength themes?Make it a point to build a list of strengths and continue to revisit these.I also believe in the long-term importance of eliminating your weaknesses.Everyday that I live without reverting back to foolish traps like negative thoughts, sinful desires and temptations or repeating mistakes of the past, I feel like Ive won a huge victory. If life is all about finding ourselves, then were far better geared to do this by living with pure intentions and free from pointless distractions and things that detract from who we want to be.You could become an industry-leader or highly successful businesswoman, but you could also become known for one misstep along the way that ruins you due to bad habits. Look at your weaknesses. Be honest. You may not want to share these things with others. But remind yourself each day of the things you need to improve and ensure you dont hurt yourself with one small weakness in a sea of strengths.4. Everyday (life) educationThe most important thing you can know is this Your education DOES NOT culminate in the public school system, secondary school or even in college. Heck, even at your Masters degree or doctorate degree ceremony. Thats an old way of thinking and it will lead you to gradually fall behind. Your education continues until the day you leave this earth. Its our time to make a move. Its our time to make amends. Its our time to break the rules. Lets begin. - lyrics from Renegades by X Ambassadors5. Find your niche and become the expertLife is about finding your niche, finding your unique way to share yourself - your voice - with the world. Through love. Through enthus iasm and passion. And with purpose. Find your thing and then crush it. I know what my thing is and Im always trying to become the best I can.My Why, which is part of my larger mission statement, lays things out in crystal clear clarity I want to help others and make a tangible difference in their lives through my writing, speaking and coaching. So in that context, I gave more thought to online writing. I thought more about the ways that we create, read and distribute content. Frankly, I simply enjoy writing and perfecting my craft. I want to continue to become the best writer I can, while growing and learning more about myself, learning about your journey and seeing how we can help each other along the way.I want to invest in myself each day. Hopefully, youre willing to do the same.Invest in yourself. It will make all the difference.Im helping thousands of people each day build their life on values and put together their personal game plan. The RoboDoctor Will See You Now

The RoboDoctor Will See You Now The RoboDoctor Will See You Now A technological idea born in science fiction is a promising answer to the challenging realities of modern health care. With fewer doctors to meet the growing health-care needs of our aging population, hospitals and health systems are investing in robotic systems for surgery and telemedicine that increase their patient capacity and geographic reach. Machines like the da Vinci Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical Systems, Sunnyvale, CA) and the RP-7i Remote Presence medical robot (InTouch Health, Santa Barbara, CA) connect patients who need specialized care with physicians who can help them even if they are an ocean apart. In Robert A. Heinleins popular 1942 science-fiction story Waldo, a physically disabled but mechanically gifted man builds a set of automated kralles that gave him super-human strength and dexterity. Waldo Farthingwaite-Jones could control his Synchronous Reduplicated Pantograph to duplicate his exact krall e motions in numerous then-fictitious applications, including cellular-level microsurgery. But fiction soon collided with reality when the nuclear industry invented a real gadget, nicknamed a Waldo, for the safe manipulation of radioactive materials from a remote location, and a new industry was born.Seventy years later, medical robots are still an emerging technology. But forces such as health-care reform, the shortage of doctors and nurses, and the skyrocketing costs of hospital care are driving its acceptance like never before.Robo-SurgeonBut its about more than just saving money. Advocates of robotic surgery, for example, claim the da Vinci surgical robot achieves significantly better outcomes than either radiation or traditional surgery in delicate procedures such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. They say robotic surgery can remove more cancerous tissue with less disruption of adjacent nerve endings than other methods, helping to reduce cancer recurrence and retain sexual function. Thats why some 85% of men undergoing prostate cancer surgery are choosing medical centers that offer robotic surgery.Introduced in 1999, the da Vinci system remains the voreingestellt robotic system for complex operations in cardiac, colorectal, gynecologic, thoracic, urologic, and head and neck surgeries. The U.S. Food Drug Administration continues to approve its use in additional surgical applications. From Day One, when I sat down at that robotic console, I knew we would give patients a better outcome, said Florida surgeon Vipul Patel in a New York Times interview. I have leid seen anyone who has done a good amount of robotic surgery go back (to traditional methods), he said. The robotic arms that comprise the da Vinci robot. Image Intuitive Surgical SystemsThe guts of the system include four robotic arms, a high-definition 3-D viewing system with up to 10x magnification, and a novel family of specialized instruments with Intuitive Surgicals proprietary EndoWrist technology. Traditional devices such as forceps, scalpels, retractors, and suture drivers have been reimagined for the robotic age, with seven degrees of freedom, a large range of motion, and less risk from surgeon hand tremors. The systems robotic and computer technologies work together to scale, filter, and translate the surgeons hand movements into micro-movements that guide the instruments, not unlike the Waldo of science fiction. Seated at a viewing and control console located in or near the operating room, the surgeon uses hand controls to manipulate surgical instruments through tiny incisions. The instruments move like high-precision puppets with each motion of the surgeons hand, wrist, or finger.Detail from the da Vinci robot.Image Intuitive Surgical SystemsRobotic surgery has its critics, especially among those concerned about its comparatively high cost and the worry that hospitals will over-hype the technology to lure patients and recoup their investments.Catherine Mohr, d irector of medical research at Intuitive Surgical, acknowledged that a typical system will cost you about as much as a solid gold surgeon. Its a fairly big capital investment, but once youve got it, your procedure costs do come down. For Mohr, the next challenges in robotic surgery are to make the technique faster and easier to use in more complex operations, which is key to their eventual routine, cost-effective use. She said she is working with prototype designs that eliminate the need to move the robot to reach additional areas of the body and add new visualization capabilities that see beyond the surface we need to guide what were cutting in a much better way.University of Washington surgeon Dr. Richard Satava predicts in the next 40 to 50 years surgery will be completely automated. The surgeons role will evolve to include management of a full information system built around the surgical environment. The future of technology, and medicine in general, is not in blood and guts, bu t in bits and bytes, he says.Robotic Hands Across the WaterThe ultimate in robotic surgery would be the integration of daVinci-style surgical robots with telemedicine technologies that enable medical professionals to consult, assist, supervise, or train their counterparts in distant locations.Intuitive Surgical says the daVinci is theoretically capable of long-distance surgery, but its not the companys current focus. But in terms of experimentation, remote operations date back more than a decade.Patient being given a consultation via a bedside robot.Image InTouch HealthThe first trans-Atlantic robotic surgery took place in September 2001, when teams of fiber-optically linked surgeons in New York and Strasbourg, France, robotically removed the gall bladder of a 68-year-old woman using robotic arms built by Computer Motion (later acquired by Intuitive Surgical). The robots chief architect and inventor, Yulun Wang, later founded InTouch Health, maker of the RP-7i.That technology may be more useful for surgeon training than for direct patient care, but there are myriad more routine applications today in which robots can not only improve patient care but also dramatically reduce its cost and increase its reach to remote communities. Thats where the RP-7i comes in.Remote presence robots bring big-city know-how to small-town clinics and trauma centers. The impact can be life-saving in the case of emergencies such as stroke or heart attack, where a fast diagnosis and onset of treatment is critical to saving heart or brain function. Telemedicine increases the publics access to advanced expertise while helping to reduce the overall cost of care. Critical care doctors in major trauma centers can evaluate accident victims remotely and, often, eliminate the need to transport them to larger hospitals. The RP-7i system features one or more physician control stations linked wirelessly to what the company calls an endpoint a remote-controlled mobile console/medical cart topped by a high-definition video screen and camera. The robot enables two-way doctor-to-doctor and doctor-to-patient communication and visualization. It is equipped with a suite of basic medical instruments to allow remote monitoring of vital signs. The consulting doctor can observe patient behavior, check bedside monitors, confer with family members, or review medical images with the patient. Through his or her robotic counterpart, the remote physician can travel from room to room and to the nurses station to review care plans. With doctors in short supply, especially in rural areas, technologies that help them be in two places at once will surely be part of tomorrows health-care landscape. As Wang says, We have to innovate our way out of this problem.Michael MacRae is an independent writer. The future of technology and medicine in general is not in blood and guts but in bits and bytes.Richard Satava, M.D., University of Washington

How to use menstrual cycle tracking app to help women be productive

How to use menstrual cycle tracking app to help women be productiveHow to use menstrual cycle tracking app to help women be productiveWomen are actually not informed about what their hormones are doing and how that correlates to their moods and overall wellbeing, said Karla Vitrone, the cofounder and Chief Operating Officer of Moody, a female-led tech company that helps women connect with and support their mood and hormone cycle.According to Vitrone, women are misinformed in thinking that your cycle is something that puts you out of operation and on the couch. Instead, its a monthly hormonal process that can be used to optimize a work schedule. What were encouraging women to do is not only to just observe their hormones and get in touch with them but to actually harness them, Vitrone said.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHeres how Moody breaks up the four leiters of menstruation, and Vitrones advice on how to use the perks in each to live your best life.Bleed (Average lasts 3-7 days)When you get your period, its actually an incredible sense of relief, Vitrone said. Its almost like New Years Dayyouve come through a cycleyou feel renewed and youre looking forward. As a result, Vitrone pinpoints the Bleed phase as a great time to create your to-do list. Forget what the calendar says, this is the start of your month. As a result, you should reflect on last month and think about highs and lows. Ask yourself what you can learn and do differently this month.Your estrogen and progesterone levels are at their lowest point in your cycle during menstruation, causing many women to feel low energy, reduced mental speed, and struggle with memory.AdditionallyIts during this time that you should think about your different phases (which youll learn about) and ask yourself how you can optimize your schedule. As soon as you start tapping in, you really do get this sense of a fre sh startthats something thats so misconstrued about periods.During this time you may feel antisocial, but thats actually extremely normal.Thats literally because we used to go and hide in caves and bleed, Vitrone said. Weve evolved a lot, but biologically we still get that craving to be quite introspective. Its because of this natural tendency that Vitrone recommends not over-booking yourself during this phase. Its a good idea to save dinners, big meetings and social outings for the next phase.Rise aka Follicular phase (average lasts 16 days)The follicular phase starts on the first day of menstruation and ends on the first day of ovulation, so this is the time that your body is preparing to ovulate. Estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone are all on the rise and are actually at optimal levels.Youre feeling great, youre looking great, youre feeling incredibly outgoing, youre very sociable, Vitrone said. Its literally the time that we are looking for a mate, biologically speakingso we really are at the top of our game. These optimal levels make us feel great and make the Rise phase a great time to get big, complicated tasks crossed off that to-do list you made. This phase is great for any task that requires being your best self. Client dinners, big meetings, and networking events should all be planned for this phase. Additionally, if youre looking to ask for a pay raise or pitch a new idea, this is the time to do it.Due to all this extra energy, some women report trouble falling asleep or heightened anxiety. Vitrone recommends not planning big meetings for early mornings, cutting back on caffeine, and avoiding foods with high estrogen levels, such as flax and soy products. When this is all a part of a lifestyleits most effective, Vitrone said. So obviously applying it to your career and your work is huge, but also making sure that youre also eating and exercising in the right way to get the full effects of it.Shift aka Luteal phase (average lasts 14 days)After ovul ation, your peaking estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels all abruptly shift and decline before they increase more gradually. The peaking and falling of hormones can majorly affect your mood, causing extreme emotional and physical swings, both the highs and lows. Youll most likely experience a peak in memory and alertness, followed by a drop in energy. Dont be alarmed, this is just your hormones at play. Accomplish your more complex tasks at the beginning of this phase while youre still alert and focused. Many women also experience increased creativity in the Luteal phase, according to Vitrone, which make it a great time for writing or art-related projects.Reflect phase (average lasts 14 days)During Reflect your progesterone peaks before lowering with your estrogen levels. The lowering of hormones usually results in the onset of PMS symptoms such as sleepiness and volatile mood changes.Vitrone recommends taking on shorter, more easily accomplished tasks, taking more self-care breaks and not scheduling any meetings that could test your patience.Despite the negative effects of PMS during the Reflect phase, Vitrone notes that the peak in progesterone also acts as a sort of sedative. You feel really calm and its when you sleep your deepest, Vitrone said. Around that phase, so about 10 days before my period, I get a lot of early nights in.Scheduling time to get great nights sleep during this phase will set you up for success during the Reflect phase.

Looking Past the Nerves in a Video Interview

Looking Past the Nerves in a Video InterviewFor candidates, even top quality ones, the video interview can be a nerve-wracking proposition. With high unemployment, you might even see more nervous candidates than ever before. These candidates might be hanging all their hopes of re-entering the workforce on this one single interview. Just because a candidate is nervous, however, doesnt mean they wont be a great hire. Many employers dismiss candidates who are a bundle of nerves in the interview, whether its an in-part or video interview. This isnt unreasonable behavior on the part of employers. Candidates that are extra-nervous in the video interview are unlikely to turn into your top performing employee. But what about the candidate who is clearly nervous but otherwise great? There are plenty of nervous candidates in interviews and the most self-confident interviewees arent always the best people for the job.You never know, your nervous candidate might turn into your best employee. Here are some things to look for when talking to a nervous candidate so you dont miss out on great talentIgnore the quavering voice and listen to the wordsYour candidate might stutter and their voice might quaver, but what are they actually saying? Too many hiring managers place style over substance when it comes to the video interview. Its true that style is important, especially when this style encompasses a candidates communication skills. The actual value of their words, however, is much more important.Listen to what your candidate is saying. There are plenty of well-spoken, confident interviewees who manage leid to say anything of substance when its their time to talk. If your talent is a bundle of nerves but still making great points about how theyve brought value to organizations in the past, this could be a great future employee. Dive below the surface level and make sure to listen to the content, not just the delivery.Know how to spot the difference between normal nerves and la ck of self-confidenceThis might be tricky ,but theres a difference between normal interview nerves and a serious lack of self-confidence. As a hiring manager, its your job to be able to spot the difference. Nervous candidates might stutter or take long pauses but they can speak clearly about their skills and qualifications. They can express to you why they would be right for the job and how their unique skill set can bring value to the team.Candidates who lack self-confidence, however, will not be able to give you a clear picture of why you should hire them. They wont be as clear about their achievements and they wont feel comfortable telling you about their value. Your company needs employees who are confident and can take the reigns. If a candidate cant even express why theyre the right person for the job in the interview, dont expect leadership skills down the line.Ask for concrete examples of valueOne of the best ways to evaluate a nervous candidate in the video interview is to get as specific as possible with your questions. To evaluate the content and self-confidence of a candidate instead of just their demeanor, ask interview questions where the candidate can really show off his or her knowledge. Instead of asking general questions about why the candidate is right for the job, get specific and ask about tasks they would need to perform or knowledge they would need in order to succeed in the position. If the candidate aces these questions with concrete examples of knowledge and specific instances of ways theyve used this knowledge in the past to bring value, it doesnt matter much how nervous they are. The nerves are most likely just a temporary state of being for the interview. The knowledge, however, will be something the talent brings along with them into the workplace. Many smart people are caught off-guard by their nerves in a video interview. Remember, this doesnt mean they wont be a great employee or the perfect person for the job. If you weed out th e nervous superstars from the bad hires, you might snag hidden talent to really grow your business. What are some ways you evaluate nervous candidates? Share in the comments

Add 10 Years to Your Image

Add 10 Years to Your ImageAdd 10 Years to Your ImageOlder candidates arent the only ones who worry about how theyre perceived by employers. Younger candidates for senior positions can take a few steps to raise their credibility. One of my more popular columns for Ladders was titled Take 10 Years Off Your Image. My tone was a bit tongue in cheek, but the theme struck a chord with many readers who told me about their own concerns about age discrimination on the job hunt. Its not just older candidates who worry about how theyre perceived by employers I received a number of letters from younger six-figure earners, many of them from sales and technology. Some of these fresh-faced candidates were concerned that their youthful appearance had kept them from six-figure jobs for which they were qualified.Men often fret about having baby faces, and many of them wrote about growing facial hair to compensate. (Or overcompensate When you landsee male models in fashion magazines with that scruffy loo k, it signifies cool youth, but a mustache screams 1970s Marlboro Man.)Maybe theres a simpler way to get the respect your qualifications deserve Produce your W-2 form from your previous employer.Show what you have made. It speaks volumes at any age.If you dont have a W-2 form to back it up, then you may not deserve the income you think you do.However, if you think you simply need a little competitive edge, let me give you Stephen Viscusis bulletproof tips to be perceived as more mature then you appear1. Be more than just a job seeker.Talk about yourself outside the boundaries of a normal interview.2. Spill the beans.Tell the things someone legally will not ask you but everyone wants to know. Are you married or single? (But for goodness sake, dont say you just got engaged No one wants to hire someone about to plan a wedding.) In the end though, more responsibility means you need more money. Have mortgage? Talk about it Kids are worth a lot.3. tischset your Facebook to Private.Use you r privacy settings on your Facebook, MySpace or any social-network profile.4. Get a land line.Have an appropriate phone message on your cell phone and try and have a landline, like most adults do for when a prospective employer calls you.5. Dont get overstyled.Young men today tend to overdo their eyebrows.6. No man-bags.7. No cologne or perfume.8. Get a suit, even if youre a creative. No matter what the job, wear a suit for the interview even if you will not be wearing one at the job itself. Women Wear what flatters your body the most. It is an interview, for goodness sake treat it as something special.9. Lose the parental dependency.Never refer to your parents or living at home.10. Dont pretend to be a lifer. When prospective employers ask you where you see yourself in five years, dont say, In your job. It wouldve been fine in years past, but now you may scare them. And trust me Nowadays you may have your boss job in five months, not five years. It might not be your looks in the en d. Dont confuse what you made in the past with what you think you are worth. Also, remember even if you still have a job, you might have been asked to take a 20 percent pay cut or more, like many six-figure earners have.Age and industry go hand in hand. There is a reality show on TV right now called Million Dollar Listing. I dont believe anyone is over 30 years old on it. It is made up of realtors, based out of LA, all making mid- to very high six-figure incomes. The men and women all earning big bucks on this show look more like tweens from The Real World than six-figure earners but they are the real thing. In the end, young is cool which is why the customers end up buying from these young, confident brokers. Just look at Silicon Valley. Those of you who think you may look too young are searching for an excuse that is probably not legitimate. Finally, I know what some Ivy League grads are asking themselves What about qualifications and years of experience? What do they count for? As a doctor, lawyer, accountant or rocket scientist a lot. Otherwise, its more about you as a person.

The Worst Times to Quit Your Job

The Worst Times to Quit Your JobThe Worst Times to Quit Your JobThere might never be a perfect time to quit your job, but some times are worse than others. Even if you hate your job and you want out of there as soon as possible, its better to make an informed decision and leave when the timing is right. Dont decide in haste and quit in the heat of the moment- it could cost you money and negatively affect your future career prospects. Be aya to consider all the factors carefully when youre thinking about handing in your resignation and weigh the pros and cons of your reasons for moving on. Reasons to StayYou have elendhing else lined up...and no savings. You dont have a long-term career plan, so your move would be more lateral than upward.Youve recently committed to a project so you would be leaving your team and your employer shorthanded at a critical time.Reasons to GoYour days with the company are probably numbered anyway, so explaining your resignation to a potential new employer i s easier than explaining why you were fired. You have one or more solid job prospects in the wings. It might be time to move on if your employer treats you so poorly that each day is a stressful, emotional ordeal. You Fought With Your Boss or Co-Worker If you have a conflict at work that cant be repaired- and that can happen- think strategically about the best way to move forward. Make sure youre not making a rash decision. Explore ending on good terms so you get a positive reference. You Dont Have Another Job Lined Up It isnt always easy to get hired, and it can be harder to find a job when youre out of work and desperate. Factors such as a down job market or your occupation not being in demand can make it an uphill battle. Hold off quitting until youve been hired elsewhere if youre in an industry with a poor job outlook. Youre About to Be Fired There are both pros and cons to quitting before it happens if you think youre about to be fired or laid off. If you quit, you wo nt have to explain to future employers during job interviews that you were terminated. Its easier to explain a resignation. The flip side is that quitting could disqualify you from collecting unemployment. When it seems pretty certain that a layoff is in your future, it might be better to wait until it happens. In addition to unemployment, you could be offered a severance package that will help you transition to new employment. Youre in Line for a Promotion Is there a promotion on the horizon? You might want to put that better job title on your resume. It will provide you with additional opportunities when youre ready to begin job hunting, and you might even like the new job enough that you decide to stay. You Dont Have an Emergency Fund Quitting can be expensive. Do you have an emergency fund with enough money to titel your expenses for a month or two...or six? Keep in mind that even if youre hired reasonably quickly, the job might not start immediately and you might have t o play catchup with at least a few bills. You Havent Really Decided on a Career Yet Do you have a clear idea of the next step on your career path? You might want to do some career research before you start looking for a job if youre not sure. Try to figure out career options while you still have job security. Take evening or online classes, volunteer on weekends, and explore some ideas for what you want to do next. Youre About to Get a Bonus Does your company give annual or holiday bonuses? You might not be entitled to receive yours if you quit shortly before yours is due. In fact, you probably wont. Hold off until afterward to ensure that you get your extra pay. Youve Taken on a Big Project It might be a good time for you to move on, but it could be the worst possible time for your boss and your team if youve just taken on a big project. Unless you must quit due a personal safety, health, or wellness issue, quitting right after youve agreed to take on a big project can reflect poorly on you and rob you of good references. The voreingestellt notice period is at least two weeks. You should consider giving your employer even more of a heads-up if youve just agreed to take on a project. You Havent Finished Classes Reimbursed by Your Employer If your employer has provided you or your family with a tuition benefit, you could lose it if you quit while you or your dependents are still in school. Check the fine print of your tuition reimbursement plan and act accordingly. Your 401(k) or Pension Is About to Vest Think long-term. It could be worth holding off on your resignation if its a matter of staying just another month or two to get additional retirement benefits. Consider what you want to do with your 401(k) and how much its going to cost you if you leave your job now. You Have a Baby...Or Youre About to Have One You might be entitled to paid or unpaid time off if youre pregnant or have an infant. Check on what happens to your eligibility b efore you decide to resign while youre on maternity leave. It could make sense to wait and turn in your resignation when youre near the end of your leave. You Still Have Vacation Time Some employers have use it or lose it vacation policies. Consider using your time if you have vacation or other paid leave still on the table and it seems likely that youll lose if you dont take it, or you wont be compensated for it if you quit. If you dont have a new job lined up yet, you could use your vacation time to find one. You or a Loved One Have Health Problems The Family and Medical Leave Act provides for unpaid time off if you or a family member are undergoing medical treatment and you need time off from work to deal with that. Your state or employer might also offer paid disability benefits. You must have worked for your employer for a certain period of time to qualify for most benefits. Also check on any employer-provided health insurance benefits to see what happens with your poli cy if you terminate employment. How to Decide When to Quit Think smart and carefully plan your departure so youre quitting at the best time. Consider if theres a way you could turn things around and learn to love your job. If not, make the decision to quit on your terms, and have a timeline for your departure in place. Take time to carefully and professionally tell your boss that youre leaving, and negotiate a start date with a new employer and a departure date with your old one to help the whole process move along more smoothly. You wont burn any bridges, and you wont have to stress about any of the details. Youll be able to focus all your energy on starting your new job and enjoying your brand new position.

How to Take Your Product to Market in Just 5 Steps

How to Take Your Product to Market in Just 5 StepsHow to Take Your Product to Market in Just 5 StepsYouve been through development and testing. Youveconducted the focus groups and took a deep dive into market research. The packaging for your product is perfected, andal you have to do now is to sell it. Unfortunately, easier said than done. Getting your message out- despite the revolutionary nature of your product- involves overcoming consumer doubts, beating the competition, and setting a price point that makes money for you without turning off kompetenzprofil buyers. To that end, you need exceptional product knowledge, creativity, imagination, persistence, and a ton of energy. However, if you adhere to the following steps, you should see the results youre looking for. And dont worry. Whether youre aprofessional speaker, coach, entertainer, oradvertising professional, the strategy is still the same. Create a Marketing Plan An excellent marketing plan is essential and serves as the blueprint for your geschftsleben success. Begin by confirming that there is actually a market for your product. Start by doing your research online, and at your local library, or bookstore. There is a plethora of information and literature available to help you determine if there is a target audience for what you want to sell. You should also do a search on businesses similar to yours and (if possible) speak to individuals who operate those businesses. Attending trade shows and joining your industry trade association is anotlageher way to conduct this research. Next, write down your specific goals, objectives, and the desired outcome for your business. After youve done this, youre ready to create your marketing plan. Be sure to include your Product descriptionTarget marketCustomer demographicsPriceProduct GuaranteeCompetitionPromotion andAdvertising PlansProfit PercentageProduct and Liability InsuranceLaunch Budget Set a Launch Date What is the exact date your product goes on a shelf, in a rack, in front of an audience, or online? Write it down. Your launch dateis considered your debut, or grand opening. It is the day your customers line up on the street or in cyberspace to be the first in line to buy your product. Figure out your launch date and then work backward to set a timeframe for everything else. Especially if its a seasonal product, this is key. Typically, a launch date is not less than six months in advance of product introduction but your launch date could be 18 months, for longer. Just be sure to leave enough time to conduct a strong marketing campaign. And, whatever date you come up with, factor in a few extra weeks for those unexpected snafus that always arise. Be sure to factor in enough time to arrange radio, TV, digital, and print interviews to get your news out- and dont forget long lead time publications like industry newsletters. Work With a Business Coach or Small Group Everyone can benefit from the guidance and support of profe ssionals. A business coach or a business support group can help you with any business concerns (such as the best payment system for your online product). Support groups, on the other hand, can help hold you accountable to reach your daily goals and objectives. You can meet with people once a week, once a month, or once a quarter. Its up to you. Take Action Every Day I cant stress enough the importance of this step. You must do something every day that moves you closer to introducing your product. In addition to hardcore tactics (like finding the right PR firm), make sure youre out there networking and establishing business relationships in your community. A good place to start is by joining your chamber of commerce. Consider Starting Small and Then Sell, Sell, Sell But not without a focused strategy. Depending on your product and respective marketing plan, you may want to start out selling to individuals, then approaching small businesses. Once you get the kinks out and have a good sense of how big your potential market is, you can expand to include retail or wholesale operations. Business-to-business selling is often fundamental to the success of many products. Frann Briggs is a professional speaker, renowned author businesswoman, and educator.

Key Technology and Marketing Trends for 2017

Key Technology and Marketing Trends for 2017 Key Technology and Marketing Trends for 2017 Technology and marketing are deeply intertwined. The connection between the two will only become stronger and more complex in 2017. What are CMOs discussing on social media? While lots of compelling subjects are broached, conversations are increasingly focused on technology and innovation. Marketing leaders are clearly coming to grips with the fact that the world around them is changing faster than ever and that incremental tech optimizations or rehashes of what used to work will not be enough. Leadtail looked at more than 309,000 tweets from 1,318 CMOs published on Twitter during the third and fourth quarters of 2016. The analysis provides insights into timely topics that marketers at all levels need to tune into. Here are some specific technology and marketing trends generating discussion today: #AI and #MachineLearning Across industries and functions, everyone is talking about artificial intelligence. CMOs are sharing lots of articles about the coming wave of AI and machine learning. Prognosticators are already saying AI will dramatically affect everything from management to healthcare, finance and insurance. Even the entertainment industry is being impacted. It seems there’s no industry where AI is not being discussed. So, although it’s still pretty early in the AI narrative, marketers need to boost their understanding of it now. They need to know how AI could potentially intersect with their company’s current (or upcoming) product and service offerings. Read up and think strategically about where the technology and marketing lines might end up converging. #IoT Marketers are looking at the Internet of Things in terms of creating new and engaging customer experiences. Wearables, smart home hubs and other IoT-enabled devices promise to deliver troves of data. This will change how consumers shop. It will also alter how companies price, deliver and service everything from home appliances to subscription video services. As the owner and defender of the customer experience, marketers can help their organizations separate the signal from the noise. Think about what new streams of data can be turned into valuable insights for the company, while also providing valuable features to customers and clients. #VR Yet another area that has marketers talking is virtual reality. Things hit a fever pitch in the summer of 2016 with the launch of Pokémon Go, bubbled up again with the innovative launch of Snapchat Spectacles, and achieved a steady boil with Google’s Daydream View VR headsets hitting the market in time for the holidays. For marketers who truly care about storytelling and connecting with consumers, VR has moved from nice-to-have to must-do. And B2B marketers must consider how VR can play a role in their marketing efforts - through interactive product demos, or simply by creating virtual meeting spaces that make it easier to get face time with various stakeholders involved in complex purchases. VR may be the biggest area for marketers to track in the year ahead. HIRING MARKETERS? WE CAN HELP! Here are more details about Leadtail's findings:

Why your brain procrastinates and how to beat it

Why your brain procrastinates and how to beat it Why your brain procrastinates and how to beat it Procrastinators put off their to-do list, delay deadlines, and generally make more anxiety for themselves and the people around them waiting to see if they can pull it off. But a new study in Psychological Science finds that it may not be entirely their fault. Some brains are more wired to procrastinate. Why some are wired to procrastinateResearchers at Ruhr University Bochum looked at 264 participants’ brains and found that people with larger amygdalas - the parts of our brains that control emotions- were more likely to be procrastinators. These delayers were also more likely to have weaker connections between the amygdala and the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex - the decision maker part of our brain when it comes to taking actions. The researchers suggest that these poorer connections interrupt our emotions and self-control and make it harder for people with these brains to focus.  â€œIndividuals with a larger amygdala may be more anxious about the negative consequences of an act ion - they tend to hesitate and put off things,” Erhan Genç, one of the study authors, told the BBC. So next time you are having trouble focusing on work, you can blame your amygdala. How to workaround thisBut you are not doomed by your brain to be a procrastinator. Brains are flexible and you can break out of your procrastination loop once you understand your personal delay tactics. One piece of advice is to break the deadline into more manageable parts, so that you do not get too discouraged to start. If you are an email procrastinator, try making the job of clearing your inbox a daily habit. Respond in a timely manner and delegate the rest. People who made email checking a daily part of their workflow reported feeling less stressed than those who let it pile up, one study found. You can also try reframing the deadline date, so that it feels present. One study found that when people in the summer were faced with a deadline in December or one in January, they were more likely to st art working immediately on the December deadline, even when the other choice is only one month apart, because we think in calendar years. When you work under a 12-month clock, a date in the calendar year seems more doable than one a year later. “While time elapses continuously, it appears that consumers think of time categorically. When thinking of a deadline as being in the same category as the present, consumers are more likely to start working toward their goals sooner,” the study authors concluded. And if personal motivation is not working, recognize that we respond better to outside pressure than our own. In a 2002 study, researchers Dan Ariely and Klaus Wertenbroch recruited 60 students for a test where students got penalized for turning in work late. Some of the students got a weekly deadline, some got one final deadline for all three projects, and some could choose their own deadline. The self-imposed deadline group performed the worst and the group with external deadline performed the best.We can get trapped in our heads to put off our work, but once you start spotting your personal delay tactics, you can break yourself free from them.

The Right Way to Procrastinate, According to Productivity Experts

The Right Way to Procrastinate, According to Productivity Experts The Right Way to Procrastinate, According to Productivity Experts Just about everyone I know is a procrastinator on some level. Going by   Malcolm Gladwell’s “10,000-Hour Rule” , basically every college student is an expert procrastinator. But procrastination doesn’t mean putting off work forever and never doing it. For most people (even college students!), work that gets put off must eventually get done. From this perspective, the real masters of putting off work are those who still manage to get everything done - and done well. Luckily, there are some simple productivity techniques that can make your procrastination work for you. In our culture, we tend to vilify procrastination as the antithesis of productivity. When   done correctly , however, procrastination can help you focus in on your goals, gain clarity on what’s important and boost your creativity. Getting all the benefits you can out of your break time means actually learning how to procrastinate. Effective procrastination is built around “active procrastination” or “productive procrastination” techniques.   Strategies can include  restructuring your tasks so that in putting off some work you actually get other valuable tasks done. You might also try pitting your task against your own boredom. (“You don’t have to write that email, but you can’t do anything else.”) Or you could default to certain helpful tasks, like organizing. In fact, active procrastination is often so productive that many people wouldn’t even call it procrastination. Here are some go-to   strategies from success experts . So often we dive into a project with little direction. Give yourself time before and during a project to step back, organize your thoughts or actions and get clarity on what parts of the task are important. This doesn’t have to be terribly formal, either. It can be as simple as clearing the clutter on your desk for focus or clearing the clutter in your planner to decide what’s a priority. It can mean having a coffee and actively thinking about your approach to a problem or job. Whatever it is for you, do that thing that allows you to get your head on straight. “Sometimes it can feel like you’re juggling a million and one things at a time. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it is worth separating all your tasks, correctly prioritizing each one and then resuming action. Doing this can clear things up in your mind and leave you feeling less overwhelmed,” says Jörgen Sundberg of   Link Humans   and   Undercover Recruiter . One of the reasons procrastination is appealing to people is that it creates the needed additional stress to push us to complete tasks or projects. The added pressure of limited time can help us focus and prioritize better. So, let yourself wait until (almost) the last moment. “I have tried many things in the past to get work done: to-do lists, diarying the stuff that I need to do, Pomodoro. However, the best thing I have found so far is the ‘Just in Time’ method of working. You know there is a task to do by a certain date. Two days before the date you spend all your time getting it done, depends on how big the task is of course,” says  Stephen Aitchison of   Change Your Thoughts- Change Your Life . “For instance, I had a program where I needed to make 15 videos. I would normally do this over a span of 3-4 weeks. However, I spent 2 days, before the program went live, and completed the videos. This way you’ve got pressure, you’ve got a commitment and you’ve got the added bonus of not overthinking things, you get out of your own way and just get it done.” Having trouble getting to the gym or writing that blog post? Let yourself procrastinate or dwell on one small step of that process. If you need to head for a workout, allow yourself to spend some time prepping your gym bag (once it’s all ready you’re more likely to go). Need to get the blog post done? Spend some time getting your space right or simply crafting the thesis. “The hardest part of anything is starting, and 9 times out of 10 if I start I can carry myself through and get a lot done. That other one time, where I still can’t do anything? That’s when I know I should just go do something fun and try again later,” says Sean Ogle of   Location 180 . Procrastination allows you to pause and look critically at a project. Taking time to critically analyze what parts of the project are holding you back might help you understand whether or not you are the best person for the task. “Procrastination is a gift. It allows you an opportunity to assess if you are the right person to work on that task or strategy. Overcoming procrastination only takes 15 minutes. If you are really avoiding something you need to ask yourself: Is this something I MUST do?” says  Neen James of   Neenjames.com . “ If the answer is no, determine can you delete it or delegate it. If you can delete it that’s fabulous. If you can delegate it, who is the best person to outsource it to? “ Productive procrastination isn’t necessarily the best fit for everyone. Depending on your situation, you may have better luck nipping procrastination in the bud. There are literally as   many approaches to managing procrastination  as there are people, and no one is always right. So, it’s important to think critically about your work, goals, and priorities when planning for your productivity. This article was originally published on Grammarly . Im a neurosurgeon, and the best morning routine Ive found only consists of 3 simple steps

I'm a neurosurgeon, and the best morning routine I've found only consists of 3 simple steps I'm a neurosurgeon, and the best morning routine I've found only consists of 3 simple steps It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when juggling career and work demands, family time, relationships, and other obligations. If you feel like you’re constantly playing catch-up with no time to achieve personal or professional fulfillment, it’s possible to turn it all around by changing one thing about your day: your morning routine. There’s a reason successful people tend to be early risers- think Tim Cook or Oprah. The quiet early morning hours are a key time for focusing on a set of routines that start your day off right, before the rest of the world wakes up and has the potential to throw you off course. If your morning routine isn’t designed to maximize productivity, then you’re missing an opportunity to boost your performance in both life and business. As a busy neurosurgeon, wrestling coach, author, speaker, and dad, my morning routine is the secret to my success. It consists of only three simple steps that set the rest of my day up for productivity - I call it my triple threat:1. MeditatingI awake each day at 5:00 a.m. and meditate for 10 minutes, without fail. This is a non-negotiable self-care aspect of my day, which is why it comes before everything else.I was fortunate to learn transcendental meditation- which involves silently reciting a mantra over and over - from instructors John Hanlon and Dean Sluyter, who’s author of several outstanding books and audio meditations, at the Pingry School back in 1980. However, over the years, my technique has changed to natural meditation- which does not require the use of a mantra. It is more centered on quiet inactivity.Meditation - or mindfulness practices - can help reduce your stress levels and avoid burnout, improve your mental health and well-being, boost your creativity levels, enhance your capacity for empathy, improve sleep and so much more.Try at least 10 minutes of meditation to start your day and discover what it enhances in your life.2. FilingThis sounds like a real 180-degree turn, rig ht? Going from relaxing and focus-enhancing meditation to…filing? Hear me out.I’ve created a personal file system labeled for each day of the month, and every day has one task in that file. When something pops up during my day that’s not urgent, I file it away in this system and don’t think about it again until its designated day. For example, I might wake up one morning, check my file, and see that today’s task is to write a thank-you note to a friend. I can check this off my list and move on with my day.Create a similar daily filing system for yourself to remove the stress of all of the little “to-dos” that can easily pile up and overwhelm you.3. PlanningStarting your day without a set plan is like running a race with no idea of the route or destination: You might get there eventually, but you’re going to be stressed, exhausted, and certainly lagging behind everyone else. That’s why the third element to my “triple threat” morning routine is consulting my day p lanner and making a list of everything I need to get done that day before it all has a chance of going sideways. Though most things have gone digital these days, I personally use a classic paper Franklin planner. There are benefits to keeping a paper day planner, including increased mindfulness and memory retention.Mapping out your day before it begins each morning doesn’t mean it won’t go off course, but it will help keep you focused on your goals and give you a better shot of actually achieving them.Lastly, try different morning routines until you land on one that works for you. While it doesn’t have to be complicated, it does need to be intentional and tailored to your needs in order to help you have a more productive, successful day.Dr. Mark McLaughlin, MD, practices neurological surgery at Princeton Brain and Spine Care and believes that we can all use the core principles behind brain surgery and apply them to our daily lives. His mission is to utilize the lessons he has learned from his career to help others manage stressful situations and engage with problem-solving.This article was originally posted on BusinessInsider.com.

Non-Disclosure Agreement FAQ - United States

Non-Disclosure Agreement FAQ - United States Confidentiality/Non-Disclosure Agreement FAQ - United States General QuestionsWhat are the differences between the various confidentiality agreements? The Potential Purchase/Transaction deals with the situation where one party is going to sell a business, part of a business, or assets and needs to disclose the financial books or other confidential information to potential purchasers. The Invention agreement protects an inventor where investors or some other person require access to confidential information in order to evaluate the invention. The Employee/Contractor agreement protects an Employer where a contractor or employee has access to confidential information belonging to the Employer. The Other Purpose agreement deals with any other general situation where one party will be providing confidential information and wants to be protected. Why have a written contract?Written confidentiality agreements provide documentation or evidence of the receiving party's understanding of the confidential nature of the information received. The receiving party's obligation to maintain the confidentiality of the confidential information is clearly expressed. A written contract allows the disclosing party to define crucial terms and more effectively control the way the information is used. Having the contract in writing is proof of what was agreed to and may help prevent misunderstandings later on. Why am I asked to specify a location or jurisdiction? Each State or Province/Territory may have its own set of laws. The selection you make is used to customize the document to your specific jurisdiction. How long should I make the duties and obligations of confidentiality last following the termination of the agreement? It is important to stipulate a term long enough to protect the interests of the disclosing party, while not unnecessarily burdening the receiving party. The length of time you should use depends on the nature of the confidential information and the nature of your particular circumstances. Remember that if you select a time period that is too long or too restrictive, a court may find the clause unenforceable. What is the purpose of the non-competition clause?A non-compete clause restricts the receiving party from starting a competing company or disclosing confidential information to competitors. Its important to note that it cannot prevent people from working for competitors. In other words, this restriction prevents the receiving party from raiding your work force. How long should I make the non-solicitation clause last for?It is important to prevent solicitation of employees for a term long enough to protect the interests of the disclosing party, while not unnecessarily burdening the receiving party. In addition, you cannot unfairly restrict the employment of individual employees. The length of time you should use depends on the nature of the confidential information and the nature of your particular circumstances. Remember that if you select a time period that is too long or too restrictive, a court may find the clause unenforceable. What is an injunction? An injunction is a court order preventing a party from actually disclosing the confidential information. This remedy is often more beneficial than monetary damages because money alone may not fully offset the damage done by an unauthorized disclosure. It also avoids the difficulty of trying to measure all the damage caused by an unauthorized disclosure. What is meant by reasonable steps necessary to retrieve lost or improperly disclosed information? This means that the receiving party will take action that would be considered normal by a reasonable person in the same circumstances. What additional clauses could I add? While the Confidentiality Agreement that Law Depot provides is very comprehensive and provides sound protection, this option is available to allow you to further tailor the contract to your specific needs. What information would be classified as confidential?Confidential information would include all information that is provided by the Seller to the Purchaser that is not common knowledge or already in the public domain. This will NOT include the following: Information that is already known in the industry; Information that becomes publicly known through no fault of the Purchaser; Information rightfully in the possession of the Purchaser before being received from the Seller; Information created by the Purchaser through the Purchaser's own independent research. Information obtained in this way must be acquired without the direct or indirect use of confidential information already received from the Seller. This may include information developed from publicly available or industry sources; Information obtained from a third party pertaining to the Seller's business where the third party may rightfully disclose the information. This may include information rightfully disclosed by a government agency or industry journal. Potential Purchase TransactionHow should I describe the name of the item to be purchased? When describing the name of the item to be purchased, it is important to indicate the specific purpose that the Purchaser can use the confidential information for. If you want the confidential information to be used for a specific purpose, use specific wording. If you want to allow flexibility in the purpose that the confidential information is used for, then use more general wording. Describe the item with enough detail so as to clearly identify the item without including any of the confidential information regarding that item. When can consent be withheld? If the transaction that is the subject of this agreement is not completed, but confidential information was shared in the process, you may withhold your consent that would otherwise allow the Purchaser to be involved in a business that is in direct competition with your business. This wording prevents the Purchaser from using the confidential information to your disadvantage. InventionWhy is there no space to describe the invention in the contract? The description of the invention is intentionally not mentioned in the contract to ensure that the contract is signed and the obligation of confidentiality is imposed on the Evaluator before any information about the invention is disclosed. Sometimes the mere description of the invention would allow someone else to steal your idea. Employee/Independent ContractorHow should I describe the position/responsibility of the Employee? This description is important because it defines the purpose that the Employee will be able to use the confidential information for. If you want the confidential information used for a specific purpose use specific wording. If you want to allow flexibility in the purpose that the confidential information is used for use more general wording. What is a bona-fide independent party?A bona-fide independent party is a party that is not associated or affiliated with the Employee nor does the employee own or control that party in any way. What does not unreasonably withhold consent mean in the non-competition clause? This wording means that the Employer will not withhold its consent for an unjust, irrational or unreasonable reason. When can consent be reasonably withheld?Ultimately, this is a question that is decided by the courts. You would need to have a just and rationale reason for withholding your consent. This may include situations where you have a legitimate proprietary interest and by giving consent your interest would be compromised. Other PurposeHow should I describe the purpose for entering into the Confidentiality Agreement? You should include a description of why you are disclosing the confidential information to the Recipient without disclosing details of the confidential information itself. This description is important because it defines the purpose that the Recipient can use the confidential information for. If you want the confidential information to be used for a very specific purpose then be specific in your wording. If you want to allow flexibility in the purpose that the confidential information is used for then use more general wording. When can consent be reasonably withheld?Ultimately, this is a question that is decided by the courts. You would need to have a just and rationale reason for withholding your consent. If the transaction contemplated by the agreement is not completed, but confidential information was shared in the process, you may be able to reasonably withhold your consent and prevent the Recipient from being involved in a business that is in direct competition with your business. This wording prevents the Recipient from using the confidential information to your disadvantage. After the Confidentiality Agreement is signedWhat else should I consider in protecting my proprietary information?A Confidentiality Agreement by itself may not be enough if you are careless with your proprietary information. Other actions you should consider that will help a court conclude that you are diligent in protecting your proprietary information include: Confidential documents should be kept in a secure location with limited access. Staff and work associates of the receiving party that have access to your confidential information should also sign confidentiality agreements. Vendors that have access to your confidential information should also sign confidentiality agreements. Documents should be marked CONFIDENTIAL or marked with other words that show the proprietary nature of the documents.

When Is It Okay to Say #8216;No#8217; at Work

When Is It Okay to Say #8216;No#8217; at Work When Is It Okay to Say #8216;No#8217; at Work In todays installment of my column, Im going to tackle a question Recruiter.com has  touched on before:  When, if ever, is it okay to say no at work? This situation comes up in many different flavors: for employees working for a company or corporation; for managers answering  their  employees requests; and for business owners answering to their clients Although the  above  list is not exhaustive, it does give you the idea that regardless of what role you play in  an  organization be it employee, manager, or owner you will always have someone that you need to answer to. And sometimes, that answer is going to be no. Were always worried about saying no at work, but it’s never the answer that gets us into trouble its how and why we give that answer that does us in. The great news about this is that we can always control the how, and sometimes even the why. The key is to be very clear about your overall goals and long-term plans. If the current situation does not support your overall goals or long-term plans,  than it should be a candidate for one of the Four Ds: delegation, deletion, delaying, or diminishing. Its Okay to Say No at Work When Youve Done These Things: 1.  Co-created a professional business commitment plan with your manager.  This is a documented that clearly states your career goals, your current roles and responsibilities, and your SMART goals that support your business commitment goals. 2)  Co-created an individual development plan with your manager.  This document states your career path and career goals. It lists the skills that you need to develop and the things to need to accomplish to  reach the next level of your career. 3)  Understood your managers business commitment plans   and how your current role and responsibilities support both his and your  professional business commitment plans. Once you have done the above, you can intelligently decide if any  request in front of you supports the previously agreed upon road map. If the request doesnt match your goals, then you can work with your manager to find another solution (i.e., modify the request so that it does fit your goals; delegate the task  to someone into whose professional business commitment plan  it does fit;  determine if the essence of the goal can be accomplished by some other means). The bottom line is to work with your manager or whomever it is you are answering to in order to find an alternative way to accomplish the essence of the goal if not the exact task itself. For more information on everything discussed here, including the Four Ds and professional business commitment plans, why don’t we schedule an appointment, where I get to know more about your unique situation? I will be happy to make recommendations on what your best steps are moving forward.  Contact  LauraRose@RoseCoaching.info.

How to create content people want to read

How to create content people want to read How to create content people want to read If you’re a blogger or online content creator, you’re probably interested in sharing your work with more people. You put a lot of time and hard work into creating the best content possible. But you know that the internet is crowded. It’s competitive and hard to get noticed. So you turn to the gurus. Maybe you take a few online courses to learn how to “grow your audience” and become a blogging rockstar. You learn all about pop-ups, lead magnets, sales funnels and more. All the strategies, hacks and tactics.Yet, despite all the expert advice, a lot of bloggers never grow their audience much. It can be frustrating and demoralizing. So what’s a desperate blogger to do?What follows is a short cartoon guide and some commentary to hopefully help you find your way.Focus on the  readerIllustrations by John P. Weiss  Some people use the internet for work and serious research, but most are there to escape. Think of your own online habits. You’re often there to be entertained, moved, o r learn something new.Focus on the reader when creating content, not how brilliant a writer you are. Think about what you’re creating from the point of view of the reader. Will she enjoy and appreciate the work? Or will she feel like you’re trying to sell her something? People can smell an agenda.Do you enjoy pop-ups on websites? Yeah, me neither. The same goes with endless email sign-ups. I don’t mind a simple, elegant email sign up, but I don’t want it shoved in my face. Mostly, I’m visiting the blog or website to enjoy the content. If I like the content, I might join the email list. But I never join an email list because I was held hostage with a pop-up. In fact, I typically leave when the pop-up bursts onto the page.Trust comes before  salesA quality blog or website is all about building a relationship of trust between the content creator and the reader. People can spot a snake oil salesman a mile away.Trust comes from creating honest, consistent work, and responding to readers respectfully and honestly. All of which takes a lot of time and effort. Rome was not built in a day, and neither are loyal followers.Whisper, don’t  shoutOne of the reasons Google became so successful was because of brilliant design. Instead of a noisy, busy home page with blinking ads and distractions, Google created a simple, colorful logo above their search bar. Simple and elegant.Minimal design and liberal use of white space are easy on the eyes and mind. It doesn’t matter how inspirational your content is if it’s suffocating on a busy page of distractions, ads, pop-ups, and noise.Design a clean, simple blog or website. Hook people with a compelling headline, interesting subheadings, and quality writing. Whisper, don’t shout. People crave elegance, not opportunistic bluster.Be kindPeople work hard. There are so many responsibilities, commitments, letdowns, hardships and more. When they escape to the internet, they don’t want stress, in your face marketing, or n oise. They want to smile. To laugh. To learn. They want to be treated with respect, and most of all, kindness. Does the content you create help people? Does it entertain them? Or are you making them feel bad?Give people hope, not a hardshipThe best writing and stories move us in some way. They tap into our emotions. We can all relate to loss, love, forgiveness, inspiration, and hope. No matter what you’re writing about, if you can infuse honest emotion into your work, you’ll connect with more people. There’s enough sadness, anger, political noise and in-your-face marketing out there. Share peaceful content that gives people hope. Hope for a better life. Better health. Better personal growth. Artistic growth. Spiritual growth. Hope for the future.Share authentic contentCreate the kind of writing, artwork, music, and stuff that uplifts people. Content that entertains, educates, moves or improves people’s lives. This is how you create content that people want to read.Work on maki ng your content  rare and valuable.  Instead of creating superficial stuff on social media, set a routine and get disciplined.Read a lot more. Travel. Meet new people. Experiment and expect to fail sometimes. Rediscover the humanity in others. Set aside your political dogma and just listen to people. They have their stories and truths.Share authentic content. Keep honing your craft. Keep your design simple and your heart open. In these ways, you’re liable to start connecting with readers who are hungry for heartfelt content that only you can create. Before you  goI’m  John P. Weiss.  I used to be a police chief. Now I’m an artist and writer. Thanks for reading! This article first appeared on Medium.
